Frequently asked questions
Is Focus Timer free?
Yes, completely. The timer, task list, sounds and keyboard shortcuts are free with no sign-up and no paid tier.
Do I need an account?
No. There are no accounts at all. Your settings and tasks are saved in your own browser, so there is nothing to sign up for and nothing to log in to.
Does the timer keep running if I switch tabs or close the laptop?
Yes. The end time is stored as a real clock time, so when you come back the timer shows the correct remaining time, and it finishes on time even in a background tab. If you close the tab completely, the running session resumes when you reopen the page.
Why do I not hear the notification sound?
Browsers only allow sound after you interact with the page, so press Start with a click or the keyboard at least once. Also check that the sound is not set to Silent in Settings and that your device is not muted.
How do desktop notifications work?
Turn on Browser notifications in Settings and allow the permission prompt. You will then get a system notification when a session ends, even if the tab is in the background. Notifications are not available in every mobile browser.
Can I change the session lengths?
Yes. Focus, short break and long break can each be set between 1 and 180 minutes, and you can choose after how many focus sessions a long break happens.
Does it work offline?
Once the page has loaded, the timer works without a connection. Nothing has to be sent anywhere for it to run.
Will my settings appear on my other devices?
No. Settings and tasks live in the browser you are using, so every browser and every device keeps its own. Clearing your browsing data resets them.
What data do you collect?
None of your own. Everything you create stays in your browser and is never sent to a server.
